Dan Schorr: Press

The second CD by New York City-based children's musician Daniel Schorr (no, not the famed NPR commentator) is adorned with the oddball artwork of underground comic artist Doug Allen -- a suitable introduction to the music inside, which also mixes the normal and the off-kilter. Schorr, who spends his days as the music director for P.S. 230 in Kensington, Brooklyn, prides himself on creating tunes that are palatable to listeners of all ages; and Every Word, a tight mesh of folk and roots-rock that also swerves well into country on later tracks, does just that. Schorr's vocal delivery is not overtly directed at kids -- it's vaguely similar to that of '80's punk rocker John Doe-- so the album will likely be best appreciated by the post-kindergarten set. Nevertheless, his often-hilarious lyrical subject matter certainly works with tots, thanks to song titles like "The Homework-eating Dog Named Rover" and "I'll Always Love My Brain." Parents might have to draw their kids' attention to the lyrics, but once they're engaged, Schorr's entertaining songs won't let them go.
